One of the most difficult aspects of military service has to be leaving your loved ones behind. This includes four legged family members. Many servicemen and servicewomen are faced with the daunting task of finding a caretaker for their pets while they’re deployed.
When Alisa Johnson and her husband Shawn were both deployed and in need of a home for their dog, JD, they realized just how many military pet owners face this same problem. To help, they founded Dogs on Deployment, a non-profit that helps those serving in the military to find a safe home for their pets while they are serving their country.
The service has helped over 800 pets since 2011, and not just cats and dogs. They have also placed birds, ferrets and even a snake named Pedro.
